When planning a space with safety in mind, slip resistance is one of the most important considerations — particularly for wet areas, outdoor settings, or commercial zones.
This is where P-Ratings come into play. P-Ratings are measured using the Wet Pendulum Test (AS 4586), which simulates a rubber foot striking the tile surface. The result is assigned a value from P0 to P5:
- P0–P2: Very low to low slip resistance. Typically used indoors in dry, non-traffic-heavy environments.
- P3: Moderate slip resistance. Suitable for residential bathrooms, indoor kitchens, and covered patios.
- P4: High slip resistance. Ideal for commercial bathrooms, shopping centre entrances, outdoor alfresco areas, and ramps.
- P5: Very high slip resistance. Best used for pool surrounds, public change rooms, commercial kitchens, or external ramps.
It’s worth noting that the higher the P-rating, the more textured the surface may feel underfoot. While higher ratings are safer, they can also be harder to clean and less comfortable barefoot. That’s why choosing the right P-rating involves balancing safety, comfort, and maintenance — and making sure you comply with Australian Standards and local building codes.
To combat this, using our tiles that are made with a SmoothGrip surface, meaning they are P5 in slip resistance but feel smooth like a P3, can give you both the safety you need without compromising the feel and cleaning abilities.
